As the summer days start creeping up on us, the doors of our closets begin to spring open. For me, my biggest excitement is the release of my collection of sandals, flats, and of course my precious heels. That’s right… goodbye boots, clogs, and ugly covered shit like rain boots and hello toes and bare feet!
A couple of months ago, I had major foot surgery that held me up… well hell, I am still held up lol and limited the number of shoes I could wear. Heels were not even an option and I will admit for about 4 weeks, I was in Crocs. Not one of my proudest moments, but it is over and I am finally getting to a place in my recovery where I can wear heels again. Now the shoes that you wear can pretty much define your outfit. Shoes are the finishing touches on the outfit and can turn a “Plain Jane” into ” I want to be Jane” just like that. Since I have had the time to think about the mistakes I made and the tips I want to implement wearing heels again, I wanted to take the time and share them with you.
Work shoes vs. Play shoes – Now this was a differentiation that I didn’t realize needed to occur with my shoes and there are many reasons as to why it should. First your work shoes should always be in good condition. I know this rule applies to men mainly, having their shoes buffed, polished and in some rare cases, tied, but it also applies to women. Don’t trek through the snow in your heels, especially if they are suede #saltstains. Keep your shoes polished and don’t allow scuff marks or the “clicking” of heels down the hall. Clicking of the heels is your heels saying, “Girl, that’s a nail making those clicks, not a typewriter, fix me!” Work vs. Play shoes also means, leave your slutty 5 inch, Spice Girl platforms in the closet and for the weekend. Now I am not saying to become boring or dull when dressing for the office, but there’s a time and a place for heels like that. Trust me.
The Higher the Heel, the Closer to God- This used to be my mantra when it came to shopping for heels. At 5 foot 4 inches, a little height does me some justice every now and then. I mean even with a 5″ heel, I am still no Adriana Lima… sighhh… but as I mentioned earlier, 5″ heels are just something that can be extremely sexy and super classy, but at work can seem to be a little bit much. Now… here is where that last statement can be argued. Where I work, we all dress super classy, up to date, but semi-conservative. We meet a ton of people per day, and of all different types. In my work environment, my 5″ heels came across as a little bit too much, a little bit too sexy and started raising some eye stares and glares from the ladies. So I have toned it down to like a 3″ heel or even a 2″ heel just for comfort reasons. I still can dress how I wanna dress, but I leave those 5″ heels home now.

Cushion for the Pushing- OK, OK maybe not the classiest headliner, but I couldn’t think of anything else…I swear! When it comes to wearing heels, do your feet a favor and get some cushioning. No matter what the height, heels are super hard on a woman’s knees, back, and even ankles. I know there have been some days where I have come home, only to soak my feet in hot water for 20 minutes before I gain feeling in them again. A lot of stores carry cushions for the balls of your feet and even for back support of the chaffing that can happen on your skin. Blisters are a given for heels, and I have used a Pinterest tip of rubbing deodorant on my feet before wearing my heels. It works! When breaking in heels, give your feet some time to adjust and bring a pair of flats or sandals to work after wearing them for some time. Some people have suggested wearing new heels around the house with socks or getting them stretched out by a shoemaker.
